If you’re a Perth CBD worker, Brookfield Place regular, or simply visiting the city, make sure to carve out time on your lunch break between Tuesday 29 and Thursday 31 July. The Brookfield Place Pop-Up Markets return this month, running from 11 am to 2 pm, and they’re the perfect excuse to step outside, grab something delicious, and discover clever locally made products.
Among the highlights is Cubicmatter, a small 3D-printing business with a big personality. Founded by Zhiwei Yu, Cubicmatter is all about purposeful design, practical problem-solving, and high-quality 3D-printed creations you won’t find anywhere else.
Whether you’re after a thoughtful gift, a new desk organiser, or something fun to challenge your brain, Cubicmatter’s stall is worth a visit. It’s a refreshing change from the usual shopping experience, especially if you want something a little different during your lunch hour in the city.

Designed with Purpose: The Story Behind Cubicmatter
The creator behind Cubicmatter, Zhiwei Yu, first encountered 3D printing in 2014 through their partner’s work with a high-precision Nanoscribe machine. It wasn’t until 2020 that more accessible commercial-grade printers opened the door for experimentation and DIY design.
What began as a hobby — printing fun items for friends and personal use — evolved into a small business after relocating to Australia. “Everyday items are more expensive [here],” Zhiwei explained. “That’s when I realised I could offer this value to others, and Cubicmatter was born.”
Today, all Cubicmatter products are created in a small home-based “print studio.” Rather than focusing on volume, Cubicmatter places emphasis on quality and thoughtful design. New products are constantly being tested, prototyped, and refined — ensuring that each item brings something fresh and interesting to market.

Practical Design with a Creative Twist
Cubicmatter’s goal is to offer products that are more economical, more unique, or higher quality than what’s already on the market. The range varies, but always reflects the same principle: it’s not just about being 3D-printed — it’s about being genuinely useful, creative, or fun.
A highlight of Cubicmatter’s offering is its growing range of puzzles — designed to challenge the mind and entertain well beyond the lunch hour. Puzzles were the very first product the business launched, and they remain one of its best-value options.
“Puzzles don’t always match the fast-paced vibe of a market, but we’ve had customers come back just to share how they crack the riddles,” Zhiwei noted. “That kind of connection and feedback is what keeps us going.”

Most Cubicmatter items are printed using Polylactic Acid (PLA), a material made from renewable sources such as corn starch. While the business doesn’t currently recycle its own print waste, Cubicmatter is already saving failed prints and offcuts with the aim of investing in recycling equipment in the future. It’s a small but significant sustainability commitment for a growing maker-led business.

Why Brookfield Place Is the Perfect Fit
Many markets are frequented by families with young children — but Brookfield Place offers a different kind of crowd. Here, Cubicmatter connects more directly with working professionals who value clever, functional design.
“Typically we are flood[ed] by kids in other markets,” Zhiwei said. “Brookfield have more working professionals. I feel a deeper sense of accomplishment when these customers choose our products.”
Whether it’s a desk organiser, a clever gift, or a challenging puzzle to take home, Cubicmatter offers something that feels tailored to CBD workers, tourists, and anyone in Perth looking for something original and smart.
