A Scented Spin on Self-Care: Meet Scrunchie Scents at the Vic Park Summer Street Party

If you’re heading to the Vic Park Summer Street Party this year, make sure to stop by one of the most unique small businesses in the lineup — Scrunchie Scents, created by Perth innovator Lauraine Godwin.
Her scented scrunchies aren’t just pretty accessories. They’re the result of decades of problem-solving, creativity, and a patented idea that started with a simple goal: helping her daughter.

From a family solution to an internationally recognised product, Scrunchie Scents is a story worth celebrating — and you can meet Lauraine and explore her range on Saturday, 29 November from 4 pm to 9 pm along Albany Highway.

How It All Began: A Simple Idea That Solved a Big Problem

Scrunchie Scents started back in 1998, when Lauraine found herself constantly dealing with her daughter’s recurring head lice issues. Determined to find a natural alternative to chemical treatments, she experimented with botanical ingredients and essential oils — integrating them into a scrunchie so her daughter could wear something she loved while benefiting from the fragrance.

The idea worked so well that Lauraine went on to patent the scented scrunchie, later strengthening the patent with an inventive step and securing protection in China and Hong Kong.

What began as a mum’s solution soon transformed into a product unlike anything else on the market.

What Makes Scrunchie Scents Different

Scrunchie Scents scrunchies contain a small breakable inner tube filled with Lauraine’s custom botanical formulation. Once gently broken, the scrunchie releases a beautiful natural scent through the fabric — no sprays, no synthetic fragrances, just botanicals doing their job.

The blends include ingredients such as:

  • Lavender flowers

  • Rose petals

  • Australian essential oils

  • Locally sourced botanicals that support calm, relaxation, and gentle aromatherapy

The scrunchies are now also available in 100% Mulberry Silk, offering hair-friendly styling with the added benefit of soothing fragrance.

Every scrunchie is made by hand, from formulation to finishing stitch.

A Business Built on Perseverance and Heart

While patents and international recognition mark major milestones, what Lauraine treasures most are the handwritten letters she’s received from grateful parents. Many shared how relieved they were to find something natural that genuinely helped their children.

The business is currently a part-time passion project, shaped around Lauraine’s energy and life commitments. But her long-term goal remains clear:
never give up — and one day see Scrunchie Scents stocked worldwide.

Sustainability plays a big role in the way Lauraine creates.
Scrunchie Scents uses:

  • Compostable packaging

  • Minimal plastics

  • Australian botanicals as the core ingredients in each formulation

It’s a thoughtful business that supports local growers while keeping environmental impact low.

Why Market Days Mean So Much

For Lauraine, the best part of attending markets is seeing people react to the product in real time. Watching the moment when someone tries a scrunchie, breaks the tube, and smiles at the scent is something she never gets tired of.

She often hears, “I just love this — I love this so much.”
For a maker, it doesn’t get more rewarding than that.
